Candidate Alex Morse – Accused, Condemned, Vindicated
As someone who identifies himself as 'a center-left, aging nineteen-sixties liberal', I find myself increasing perturbed by the way some of today's young leftists often behave in the same manner as those on the extreme right. For both sides, verification of accusations no longer matters – it is enough to publish allegations aimed at ruining careers.
Complaints published in a student newspaper at the University of Massachusetts cited zero specific episodes, zero named victims, zero sources and not even how many students supposedly complained about his behavior. Nevertheless, that article immediately created a social media 'news surge' about candidate Alex Morse. Several groups immediately dropped their support for Morse as a Democratic congressional candidate. They were apparently unwilling to wait for either a rebuttal or concrete evidence in support of the allegations.
There's no point in recapping the whole story. It's laid out in great detail in this New York Times (article link). For me, it's just sad to see that 'fake news' sometimes is a real problem, and isn't limited to only one side of the political spectrum.
