John McWhorter's successor
I first encountered Coleman Hughes when I was looking for contemporary conversations about Black Lives Matter. The video Has Anti-Racism Become A New Religion? | John McWhorter (Ep.2) caught my attention because I had seen John McWhorter before. Though most of his books are about linguistics, McWhorter was also the author of Authentically Black, a book I'd first read in 2009 and am now re-reading. He is also a professor of multiple disciplines at Columbia University. In the video I watched, I learned that the interviewer, Coleman Hughes, had actually been a one of McWhorter's students at Columbia .
That fascinating conversation led me to another YouTube video on the topic, Coleman Hughes on BLM, the perilous myth of universal white racism, and the Moral Landscape. During three successive daily treadmill sessions, I watched the 90-minute interview conducted by Curt Jaimungal of Toronto, Canada. He is an award winning filmmaker from Toronto and the founder of Toronto's first film incubator. The interview was part of Jaimungal's work on Better Left Unsaid The Film, an open-source documentary exploring the ideological line between the extreme left and the moderate left. The video with Coleman was a long unedited conversation, portions of which may be potential footage for the upcoming indie documentary exploring the question “When does the left go too far?”
After watching the McWhorter and Hughes interviews, I ran across Coleman Hughes VS Ta-Nehisi Coates, in which Ta-Nehisi argued for — and Coleman argued against — H.R. 40, which was to establish a commission to study reparations proposals, before a House Judiciary Subcommittee on June 19, 2019. Though it predated the current Black Lives Matter surge, it illustrates — in 25 minutes — the division in ways of thinking about the issues within the diverse community of young Black intellectuals. Well worth watching for anyone tired of the repetitive coverage and commentary about the contemporary Black Lives Matter movement
Perhaps the best introduction to Coleman, however, might be the Oct 20, 2018 , interview excerpt titled Coleman Hughes | The “N” Word. In 7 minutes and 16 seconds, one can see the remarkable qualities that will almost certainly ensure that Coleman will be a prominent commentator about a wide range of social issues in the coming decades.
